Loft conversion
Introduction / Brief
The existing dwelling was a 2 bedroom bungalow. The clients wanted to look at converting the roof to form 2 bedrooms for guests and family visits. In addition the building had been altered and extended by previous owners and the client was keen to improve and harmonise the external appearance.
Site / Context
The existing dwelling had a raised lawn to the front of the property and poor vehicle access and visibility. In addition to the renovation and extension of the house. The front lawn was reduced in height, a new drive and parking area provided which allowed a car to turn onsite and a car port formed for the clients camper van.
Materials
The existing building was a total mis-match of materials, stone, brick, render, pebble dash and timber cladding. There was also a variety of window styles which had been added to a various times. A simple scheme of re-rendering the existing building was proposed along with new contemporary aluminium composite windows.
Sustainability
While the building was being re-rendered the opportunity was taken to upgrade the external wall insulation with the addition of external wall insulation. As part of the loft conversion significant levels of insulation were introduced to the roof the outcome being the heating bill of the property were cut by more than a third.
